Warriors 2022 Men’s Indigenous Jerseys should be a regular for Warriors fans. PUMA partnered in designing these jerseys. Te Tairawhiti based Ta Moko artists Maia Gibbs Ngai Tamanuhiri Rongowhakaata Ngati Kahungungu, and Henare Brooking Ngati Porou Rongowhakaata Te Whanaua a-Apanui Ngati Kahungunu, Ngati Tuwharetoa), all of Toi Ake maori creative workshop. Te Amokura the Indigenous jersey was designed in 2022 to express our connection, unity, and identity. The jersey will be worn by the Newcastle Knights against round 12 on Saturday 28 Mai as part of the celebrations for the NRL Indigenous Round. Te Amokura’s jersey draws its inspiration from the manu (bird), the same title. They are recognized in Aotearoa Australia, the Pacific and elsewhere. The Amokura helped the great navigators of the Pacific to map some of the most important bodies on the planet. The distinctive red tail feathers that make up the Amokura are its most prominent feature. These feathers were highly prized by Te moananoi, a Kiwa’s prominent warriors. These two red stripes are on the jersey. These colours speak to significant aspects about the club’s identity. They also reflect the journey of players and staff who left home, with their families, and for their fans. Blue is mana, oana. The Pacific ocean is what connects Aotearoa and Australia to the Pacific ocean. It is what we call our collective whakapapa. Green is the symbol of mana whenever there is one. Aotearoa means “the land” and is an acknowledgement by the Warriors of Australia being their true homeland. Our Aboriginal whanaunga and the original peoples of Australia who hosted the team in the previous three seasons. Red represents mana tangata. The people are the link that binds players in the present, past and future. As they move on to battle, players’ whakapapas are interwoven. Te Po is represented with black. It is a place for learning and development. White is Te Ao. It is a place to express yourself and take action. The jersey is similar to an “obi” (cloak) and can be worn as a reminder of one’s own personal journey or as a jersey. It is a symbol and celebration of our cultural identity. This Jersey is identical in appearance as the one worn by Indigenous athletes during the round.
