The V-shaped strips are in red and Yellow, the colours Japan uses for its National Flag. Additionally, there are a number of upside-down Vs running along the back. This design is reminiscent the V-shaped Crest, which was attached to the chest on a “kabuto”, a helmet used by warriors.
